About Sonalia:
Born August 28, 1981 in a small town in Maine, Sonalia (sohn-AH-lee-UH) never sought out playing the guitar! She has sung all her life (growing up in an acapella-singing church may have influenced that...). She had a year of piano lessons around age 10 (but couldn't continue due to the pressures of school studies) & played clarinet in middle school. Her idea of fun was singing & dancing to the radio when no one else was around so she could imagine an audience enjoying her performance. She also loved playing with vocal harmonies & to this day can harmonize on the spot with a song she's never heard before. She feels intuitively where it's going & what vocals would best support it. As far as backup instruments were concerned, guitar seemed so different from the linear scales of the piano & had no appeal whatsoever to Sonalia.
It all started in September 2019; a song idea came to her in a dream ("Caterpillar") and she had no idea what it would sound like or what the words would be, or even the subject matter. Ed Sheeran appeared to her in the dream, felt to her like an old friend, & made a caterpillar joke, to which Sonalia laughed & said "You should write a caterpillar song!" Ed replied, "No, you're going to write it." When Sonalia recounted the dream to local Sedona musician Dan Vega, he agreed: "You should write it." This time Sonalia paid attention.
What followed in waking life became a hauntingly beautiful song composed by herself about a loved one departing for the afterlife, returning to comfort those left behind. Sonalia's own maternal grandmother would often appear post-passing in the form of a butterfly, so the chorus line "I'm just a caterpillar now but I'll be your butterfly when I move into the Light" struck a chord (pun intended) & Sonalia knew it also would represent millions of other souls who have left loved ones behind. The song seems to have the underlying message of "I know you miss me but I'm always with you in your heart."
Sonalia brings a unique appreciation to a blended balance of masculine & feminine energies with her voice. She enjoys experimenting with a variety of song-writing methods & styles; she's been inspired to play in the healing frequency of 432
In preparing to record for the first time, Sonalia knew she would need a stage name ("Julie Hudson" was quite common already in the music scene). After a couple days of over-thinking, she realized the last three letters of her last name sounded like a beginning. Adding "alia" gave it a pretty tone that she liked. It was only after creating this name that she realized "sona" & "alia" had spiritual meanings of: "gold / wisdom / beloved / beautiful / sound" & "supreme / exalted / attribute of the divine / light", respectively.
As if making up for lost time, Sonalia, now 42, is not holding anything back.
